What is D-EYE?
The revolutionary D-EYE portable retinal imaging system is a breakthrough modern day digital ophthalmoscope that allows medical practitioners to take high definition photos or video of a routine ophthalmoscopy exam with their smartphone and immediately share with colleagues or specialists for further assessment. Turning your smartphone into a powerful, portable fundus camera, the external D-EYE lens redirects the camera’s light to eliminate corneal glare. Our included, easy to use, HIPAA compliant smartphone app creates the perfect combination for portable fundus photography and ophthalmology.
How Does It Work?
Positioned 1 cm from the pupil to take direct images of the posterior pole, D-EYE’s field of view is similar to a traditional ophthalmoscope:
- Single image - 5-8 degrees naturally dilated
- Single image - 20+ degrees dilated
- Video Function - Increase the field of view by using the D-EYE video function to record an acquisition protocol, starting from the posterior pole and then moving to the upper, nasal, inferior, and nasal peripheral retina to the equator. High definition videos can be obtained, encompassing the posterior pole, including the macula, optic disc, and peripheral retina.
The D-EYE can account for various refractive errors of the eye by using the smartphone’s auto-focusing capabilities to compensate between -10D myopia to +5 hyperopia. This allows for clear, “in focus” results. The D-EYE portable retinal imaging system provides a view of the optic disc with pupils as small as 2mm.
How far should the lens be from the retina when recording an exam?
The lens should be as close as possible. 1-3 cm from the retina is recommended. All you should see on your smartphone’s screen is the iris and pupil.
Should I dilate or not dilate?
If you just want to see the optic disc, then naturally dilated (5-8 degrees) in a dimly lit room will be fine. If you want to see more structure, dilating is recommended.
Is the D-EYE a replacement for the fundus camera?
No, D-EYE is a front line retinal screening tool (just like the traditional ophthalmoscope). D-EYE captures direct images of the posterior, allowing the user to record and share their findings with an ophthalmologist or other specialists who might recommend further examination of the patient’s eye in their office where more sophisticated diagnostic instruments are located.

Can the D-EYE retinal imaging system diagnose specific eye diseases?
Yes. However, a trained eye specialist should be consulted for further assessment. Many specialists who do a routine ophthalmoscopy use D-EYE. Due to its low-cost, portability and ease of use, D-EYE is an ideal retinal screening tool for large patient groups in eye health. It can be used to screen for glaucoma, screen and grade diabetic retinopathy (requires dilated eyes) and age related macular degeneration (requires dilated eyes).
Is there a learning curve associated with using this technology?
There is a short familiarization period required as the D-EYE operator learns how to focus the smartphone’s camera using our lens attachment. A typical user can become comfortable capturing fundus photography within 30 minutes of using D-EYE.

How will this technology impact the practices of ophthalmology and telemedicine?
We envision the D-EYE retinal imaging system being used in a variety of clinical and non-traditional settings. An ophthalmologist’s office is usually well outfitted with expensive fundus cameras, slit-lamps and other diagnostic instruments. D-EYE will supplement those tools for an ophthalmologist, offering frontline retinal screening, which may provide indications that further examination is required. It also gives the ophthalmologist a portable retinal imaging tool for hospital rounds, out-of-office visits or at home eye tests.
